Warm up


Study the following adjectives and put them into the correct categories below (some words can go in more that one category):


curly | curvy | dark | dyed | ginger | hairy | oval | overweight | pale | pretty | spotty | straight | tanned | thin | wavy | well-built

Describe the pictures


Look at the pictures and choose the correct words to complete the texts:



1. The girl in the picture is rather pretty/hairy. Her hair is straight/wavy, blond/ginger and long/shoulder-length. She’s got pale/dark skin and a rather round/freckled face.





2. The man looks slim/overweight . His skin is quite pale/tanned, he has a round/an oval face and he is clean-shaven/has a beard. His hair is shaven/medium-length and grey/dyed.
 

Take turns to describe the photographs. Try to use qualifying phrases and adverbs such as He/she looks ..., rather, quite, fairly, a little, extremely, etc.


For example:

"She looks quite slim. She’s got dark shoulder-length hair and rather pale skin ..."










 

Opposites


Study the descriptions on the left and complete their opposites on the right.

Work in pairs


Think of a celebrity or other famous person who you think matches each of the ‘polite’ descriptions below. Compare with other pairs.

  1. He’s a bit overweight.

  2. He’s quite stocky.

  3. She’s definitely too thin.

  4. He/She looks very mature now.

  5. She’s rather plain.


 

Changing your appearance


Complete the sentences below with the following verbs in the correct form. One of the verbs is used twice.

Work in pairs. How would you change your appearance in each of the situations below?

  1. You have an important job interview and you want to make a good impression.

  2. You are an actor/actress and you want to play a role 10 years older than your real age.

  3. You are an actor/actress and you want to play a role 10 years younger than your real age.

  4. You are on the run from the police and you don’t want people to recognize you.


 

Talking point


Discuss any of the following questions:

  1. How does your appearance influence the opinion that people have about you? Talk about some situations, e.g. at a job interview, party etc.

  2. Is there too much pressure on young people to look good?

  3. What physical characteristics do you find attractive?
