Reading and Use of English Part 3 - B2 - Grammar focus: Prepositions 2

Exam practice

Reading and Use of English Part 3

For questions 1–8, read the text below. Use the word given in capitals at the end of some of the lines to form a word that fits in the gap in the same line. There is an example at the beginning (0).

The clothes we choose to wear

The clothes we wear can be a form of (0) communication (COMMUNICATE). Clothes, like a (1) ______ (SPEAK) language, give out a message. This can be simple, for example, when we choose clothing for keeping warm, to attend a football match or (2) ______ (GRADUATE) ceremony, to announce our (3) ______ (POLITICS) views or just to look attractive.

It isn’t always this simple, however. As with speech, our reasons for making any statement have a (4) ______ (TEND) to be quite complex. The man who buys an expensive coat may want it not only to offer (5) ______ (PROTECT) from bad weather but also to magically surround him with the qualities of an international film star. (6) ______ (NATURE), people rarely succeed in satisfying both these requirements at once. Even (7) ______ (SUPPOSE) that both these statements could actually be made by one single coat, this ideal item of clothing may not be available and, if it is, it may be (8) ______ (AFFORD) for people who have limited money to spend on clothes.

EXAM TIP!

  1. Look at the words before and after each gap and decide what kind of word you need to write – for example a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc.

  2. You may only have to make one change to the word in capital letters, or you may have to make two or more changes.

  3. If you need to write an adjective or adverb, does it need to be positive or negative? To make an adjective or adverb negative, you usually need to add a prefix.
